i book a seat at your theatre
again,
even after all these years.
what once was an empty hall
now swarms with strangers
pulled from pages we knew.
toddlers tread on my toes,
teenagers, too young to be old,
chew gum in my ears,
adults older than both of us
throw your name around.
then the lights go out.
flooded in darkness,
my eyes strain,
peering past the tall man
in the seat ahead,
barely catching
the outline of you.
same face, same name,
but your voice has changed:
it no longer finds me,
doesn’t whisper between breaths,
doesn’t stumble over my name.
you project –
clean, practiced,
pausing where they expect,
laughing where they lean,
speaking like a script
i never read.
your warmth
reaches the back row
with ease –
but never once
does it land
in my lap.
