My brother
Finds his way into every single one of my countless stories.
Look between the pencil-smudged pages and you’ll find him there
Long ginger hair like sunbeams
Our mother’s eyes and our father’s smile.
My brother
Waits outside my bedroom door every Monday night
While I change out of my uniform
To catch half an hour of time before he starts his tutoring
Following my footsteps as carefully as his textbooks.
My brother
Bounds like a puppy across the carpet of fallen leaves
Stick swinging wildly in the air
And through the intricate web of the stories in his head
Narrating his narrative with every stumbling leap.
My brother
Puts on his headphones in the car
The Minecraft stickers i bought peeling off at the edges
As he mouths the lyrics to a song I snuck into his playlist
Head bopping gently before it rests on my shoulder.
My brother
Looks at me tiredly as I wave him goodbye at the station
The sunrise a salmon-coloured suggestion on the cloudy horizon
“Have good day at school, Buddy, I’ll see you later.”
And the car door closes.
My brother
Seems to be woven so deeply into the fabric of my heart
That if you tried to pick apart the stitching you’d be there for years
Your fingers tracing over
A growing lifetime
Of embedded fondness.
My brother
Races through the summers faster than the raindrops
Dripping down the car window as we sing tunelessly to Taylor Swift
So bound onwards, little puppy.
Keep on chasing those
Endless tomorrows.
